Ferry from Pulau Sibu Capsized off Tanjung Leman

One day after returning from Kelong off Pulau Sibu, we heard the news of ferry with 29 passengers on board capsized while it was around 300m before reaching Tanjung Leman, Mersing, Johore, Malaysia.

On our way to Kelong, 40 of us were without life jacket. None of us protested on that while on board. One person complained to me while we were at the kelong. On our returning journey, we were given brand new life jackets.

The problem is we are not trained to pay attention to our own safety while on holiday. Some people did not want to spoil the holiday mood so did not want to complain.

Why would 29 persons go on board a ferry which was supposed to carry only 12 passengers? Are the ferry operator the only one to be blamed? Shouldn't the last few passenger refuse to go on board a overloaded ferry?

Many God, One God, No God

To most people, there are many brands of camera.

To some people, there is only one good brand of camera. They would not consider any other brands. They would spend time arguing with people how good the brand is, the technologies used by the brand and focusing on the technology used. Most of them would buy new camera for upgrading even the old camera still functioning perfectly.

To some photographers, there is no only one good brand of camera, camera is an instrument to capture the beautiful moments of life and they enjoy taking photos, enjoy improving their skills on using camera in order to take better pictures.

Ask and It is Given

The key point is how strongly you ask for. How strongly you want it. How confident you are when asking.

NexentaStor Project - Minimum Harddisk Size Required

I was searching to find out what is the minimum size of syspool and found this article useful. ie 4GB.

Indeed, I installed on a 160GB SATA disk and found that it only used 2.88GB.

Ordering from www.dealextreme.com

Ordered a few items to test out www.dealextreme.com as recommended by Azri.

Ordered date : 24 Oct 2010
Shipped date : 4 Nov 2010
Received date : 7 Dec 2010

This is the last order to arrive. Other orders placed on the same date are received last Thursday 3 Dec 2010 and 22 Nov 2010.

The key point is that all orders arrived as expected except that shipping would take six to eight weeks.

As no shipping is charged and for small interesting items, we might not be able to get those items locally at the price offered. Overall, I am happy with it.

Google Calender SMS Reminder

We have our own email server and use Thunderbird as the email client, however, I use gmail for personal correspondences. I find that the reminder of Google calender very useful as it can send text messages to my mobile phone to remind me of appointments.

In order to have reminder for my business appointments, I installed Thunderbird add-ons: Lightning and Provider for Google Calendar so that I can set the appointment reminder using Google calendar within Thunderbird.

When an event is created, I can choose either local calendar or Google calendar.

Daemon Tool Lite

Borrowed a DVD titled "Photoshop CS4 Learn by Video" to learn how to use Photoshop from National Library, shy to say that I have until now never learn how to use Photoshop after picking up photography as a hobby for more that 2 years, but my progress is so slow that I would have to borrow many times.

Luckily I found that Daemontool lite can mount the disk image created using its Disk Imaging tool as virtual drive so that I can have it on my PC to learn from time to time without worrying about borrowing again from the National Library.

Circular Polarizer Lens

Bought a CPL at Alan Photo, I stacked it on my UV filter. The salesperson reminded me that it resulted in vignetting and I needed to get a slim UV filter. I didn't as I would like to test out first.

It is true that vignetting is there even without UV filter. I read somewhere that a super slim CPL would solve the issue. So I ordered a Pro1-D Super Slim Wide Band PRO1 CPL from dealxtreme. It took more than a month to come, ordered on 24 Oct, shipped on 5 Nov, arrived on 4th Dec 2010.

Still vignetting is there. Consulting with my friend, Ong SS, he told me to step down the F stops, closing the aperture to smaller value would get the issue resolved. Indeed it works!
